  44. INTRODUCTION.
  45.  
  46. POSTER 6 is the Windows 95/98 32-bit version of the acclaimed Windows shareware 
  47. program for making big posters, signs, and banners. Posters can be up to 9 feet 
  48. by 9 feet at 300 DPI, even bigger at lower resolutions.Poster combines the best 
  49. features of word-processing, graphics, and desktop publishing with features 
  50. especially tuned for big posters and banners. This includes complete flexibility
  51. in the placement of graphics, a full set of drawing tools and over 100 special 
  52. effects (like 3D, rotate, and arch) for text. All text and graphics are enlarged
  53. and tiled over multiple pages. POSTER supports all True-Type and ATM fonts, and 
  54. imports graphics from BMP, GIF, JPG, TIF, and WMF files, scanners (TWAIN),  the 
  55. Clipboard, and OLE applications. A spelling checker is included. POSTER supports 
  56. full color, and all Windows-compatible printers.  Full support is provided for 
  57. non-standard poster and paper sizes, including continuous form banner printing. 
  58. POSTER includes exclusives like picture smoothing for smooth enlargements, and 
  59. font stretching for all windows fonts, including special effects.

  61. A tutorial, extensive on-line help, and over 100 examples and templates are 
  62. included, together with over 30 textures and many fancy borders.

  75. NOTE TO ALL USERS of POSTER 5:
  76.  
  77. POSTER6 installs in a different directory from POSTER5.
  78. If you are upgrading from POSTER5, your old posters will still be 
  79. in the POSTER5 directory, NOT the POSTER6 directory. 
  80. (note: POSTER 6 CAN read files from POSTER 5 with no problem).

  82. To move your files from Poster 5 to Poster 6 and get rid of Poster 5:
  83. 1. Select every .POS file in directory POSTER5 and drag it to POSTER6.
  84. 2. Click on the directory POSTER5 and Delete it.
  85.  
  86. Users of POSTER 5.2:
  87. Poster versions 5.2 through 5.2h erroneously created temporary files
  88. and did not remove them.  This problem is now fixed, but you must
  89. manually remove these old files to free up space on your disk.
  90. You need only do this once.
  91. To do this:
  92. 1. Bring up an MS-DOS window.
  93. 2. Enter the command:
  94.     erase c:\windows\temp\~df*.tmp
  95. OR
  96. 1. Bring up Explorer and go to folder \windows\temp.
  97. 2. Manually delete all files of the form ~dfxxxx.tmp.
  98.

  100. NOTE TO USERS OF POSTER 6 BETA only.
  101.  
  102. If you have installed the BETA version of POSTER 6 (identified in the
  103. first screen as Poster 6 Beta), then you must delete your POSTER6
  104. directory before you install this version of Poster 6.
  105. Remember to save any posters (*.POS) that you created in Poster 6 Beta
  106. that you want to use again.
  107. 1. Copy any .POS files from \POSTER6 to a temporary directory.
  108. 2. Delete the POSTER6 Directory.
  109. 3. Install Poster 6. (Run poster60.exe).
  110. 4. Copy your saved .POS files from the temporary directory to \POSTER6.

  115. Double click on poster60.exe to run the installation program.

  118. PRINTER NOTES:
  119.

  121. BANNER PRINTING ON HP PRINTERS:
  122. Banner (continuous forms) are supported on HP 6xx and 7xx printers that
  123. specifically support continuous forms - banner mode.  HP 8xx printers
  124. do NOT support continuous forms.
  125. IMPORTANT: You MUST set your printer into banner mode: 
  126. 1. Physically set the lever on the printer to banner mode.
  127. 2. Set the driver to banner mode:  File->Printer Setup->Properties.
  128.    Click on Continuous Forms (banner).
  129. 3. When you print, in the File->Print dialog box, click "Continuous Forms".
  130.

  132. BANNER PRINTING ON EPSON COLOR STYLUS PRINTERS.
  133. The epson color stylus printers will print a banner up to 44 inches wide
  134. as a single continuous page.  To do this:
  135. 1. Go into Printer Setup for the Epson, and set page size to User Defined,
  136.    and set length to 44".
  137. 2. Start POSTER.
  138. 3. Select New->Horizontal (or Vertical). DO NOT SELECT BANNER MODE.
  139. 4. Create your poster.
  140. 5. Print it at 1x.
  141. If you want something longer than 44", you can select BANNER, then create
  142. a 2 page banner.  You will have to tape the 2 44" pages together.
  143.  
  144. HP680C (and 682C):
  145. To print Continuous forms (banner paper) correctly, you MUST have 
  146. version 9 of the printer driver.  Version 8 does not properly handle
  147. characters that cross page boundaries in banner mode.
  148. When printing banners:
  149. 1. Be sure to set the Paper mode to Banner in  the printer setup properties box.  
  150. 2. Also, make sure the 'continuous forms'
  151. box is checked in the POSTER Print dialog box.
  152.  
  153. CONTINUOUS FORMS:
  154. Poster supports continuous forms on dot matrix and the HP680. Be 
  155. sure to check the continuous forms box in the POSTER Print dialog box.
  156. You may use continuous forms for posters or banners.  Using it for
  157. posters causes your poster to be printed in continuous strips, reducing
  158. the amount you have to paste together.
  159.  
  160. PROBLEMS WITH PAGE EJECTS WITH CONTINUOUS FORMS:
  161. If your printer page ejects while trying to print continuous forms,
  162. you must adjust the page size.  EACH time you print:
  163. 1. Select File->Print.  Then select Continuous Forms.
  164. 2. Click on "More"
  165. 3. Adjust the field "Override Paper Size, Height" to a smaller value.
  166. 4. Select OK.
  167. 5. Select OK.
  168. You may have to adjust this field up or down to get Poster to go to the
  169. very edge of the current page, and then begin the next page at the very top of
  170. the next page.
  171.  
  172. PROBLEMS WITH DROPPED CHARACTERS AT PAGE BOUNDARIES:
  173. If POSTER drops characters at page boundaries, try checking 
  174. the box marked "Method A1" in the PRINT dialog box. 
  175. If this still doesn't work, try "Method 
  176. B" or "Method C".  Also, see the special setup instructions below.

  179. LASERJET III USERS.
  180. If the posters you print are missing characters at page edges, then do 
  181. the following:
  182. 1. Select "Method A" in the Poster Print Dialog box.  Also, be sure your 
  183.    printer is set to 300 dpi.
  184. 2. If this doesn't work, or it is too slow for you, install and use the 
  185.    Laserjet II driver. 
  186.  
  187. LASERJET 4 USERS.
  188. If you cannot successfully print posters, configure your printer as 
  189. follows:
  190. 1. Select "Printer Setup":
  191. 2. Select "options". 
  192. 4. Select "Graphics Mode" = "raster", "Graphics Quality"="high", and
  193.      check "print true-type as graphics".
  194. 5. If posters still do not print properly, then in the File->Printer Setup box, 
  195. check the boxed marked "Method A1". This should always work.  
  196.  
  197. HP LARGE FORMAT (650, 760) USERS:
  198. Poster will support these printers. From printer setup, select the final page size
  199. you want, such as 22 x 44.  Then start Poster and select a horizontal or vertical
  200. poster. Print the poster at 1x.
  201. If you want something longer, start Poster and Select Custom Size.  Then select
  202. the number of pages long that you want (such as 1 page high by 2 pages long).
  203.  
  204. POSTSCRIPT PRINTER USERS.
  205. Not all Special Effects characters print properly on Postscript printers.
  206. If you get funny characters printing out, it is probably because you are
  207. using special effects.  Don't use those particular special effects that are
  208. marked in Poster as bad on postscript printers.
  209.  
  210. If you get postscript errors, or you are loosing characters at page 
  211. boundaries:
  212. 1. From the control panel, select Printers, then select 'Setup.
  213. 2. Select "options", then select "advanced".
  214. 3. Select "print true type fonts as" "Bitmap (type 3)".
  215. 4. Close the control panel.
  216. 5. Start POSTER.
  217. If posters still do not print properly, or print too slow, then in the 
  218. PRINT dialog box, check the boxed marked "Method A1". If this fails, 
  219. try method "B".

  341. DEINSTALL  (REMOVING POSTER)
  342.  
  343. To remove POSTER from your system, do the following:
  344.  
  345. 1. Find the directory containing Poster, usually "Poster5" or "Poster6".
  346. 2. Delete all files, using erase *.*.
  347.    Delete the file 'poster.ini' from your WINDOWS directory.
  348. 3. If you want to save the saved poster files, but remove the
  349.    program, then delete the files POSTER.EXE, POSTER.TXT, POSTER.HLP, 
  350.    and all the *.POE files.
  351. 4. To remove the start icon:
  352.     Win95: Click on 'Start', then 'Settings', then 'Task Bar', then
  353.         'Start Text Menu', then 'Remove'.  Find the Poster entry,
  354.         highlight it, and then click on 'Remove'.

  358. USING POSTER.
  359.  
  360. To start using poster, simply double click on the poster icon.  POSTER 
  361. will start and ask you for the poster or banner format. After selecting 
  362. the format you want, it will present an empty page to you.  Just start 
  363. typing to begin making your poster.

  365. The POSTER install program also associates *.POS files with POSTER.
  366. Double clicking on a POS file will 
  367. automatically start poster with that file.

  381. POSTER is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
  382. to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your
  383. friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
  384. another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to
  385. provide personal computer users with quality software without
